Focus Area 3

The Built Environment–Construction, Renovation & Demolition

Our built environment consumes extensive raw materials, energy and water, and produces long-term carbon emissions. Key actions in this area include:

  • Adopting circular building, renovation and demolition standards.

  • Leverage public investment in municipal buildings and infrastructure, and prioritize renovation of existing building stock.

  • Develop shared knowledge and supportive policies for financing.

  • Scale up the use of secondary building materials.
  • Pilot decentralized, renewable energy systems.

  • Develop affordable circular housing through community land trusts.

  • Work with zoning to promote high-density development.
